Young anglers in Moreton Bay are invited to dive into the excitement of the Moreton Youth Week Fishing Competition this month.
Open to residents aged 12 to 25, the photo-only competition runs from Tuesday, 7 April to Sunday, 19 April, and is hosted by local provider of fishing lessons, 2 Bent Rods. The competition aims to encourage young people to put down their devices and engage in the great outdoors, learn about local ecosystems and sustainability, and develop patience and problem-solving skills along the way.
Sam Beckmann, co-founder of 2 Bent Rods, said the annual competition was about so much more than just catching fish.
“Getting young people outdoors, off screens and into nature changes lives,” Sam said. “Fishing creates space for conversations, friendships and resilience – and that’s what Youth Week is all about.”
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery highlighted the unique opportunities the event offered young anglers.
“There are few better opportunities for our young anglers to show off their prized catches than the Moreton Youth Week Fishing Competition,” he said.
“Moreton Bay is home to any number of great creeks and waterways that make it an ideal place to drop a line. I wish all competitors the very best of luck. Happy fishing!”
How to Enter: Categories, Catch Photos, and Prizes
Land-based fishing is allowed anywhere in Moreton Bay, with permission where required.
Entries are divided into 12 to 17 and 18 to 25 age groups. Categories range from Bream and Whiting to Flathead, Carp, Tilapia and Mystery Species. There’s even a ‘Rubbish’ category, helping participants contribute to improving the health of Moreton Bay by removing litter from fishing spots.
To enter the Moreton Youth Week Fishing Competition, young anglers are required to submit photos of the fish they have caught via the 2 Bent Rods app, which is available at 2bentrods.com.au/two-bent-rods-app. Entry is free, and there are several prizes up for grabs.
Those interested in participating can also join a dedicated Facebook group for the event to receive updates, tips and a chance to share stories with other competitors. Find the group by searching ‘Moreton Youth Week Fishing Comp’ on Facebook.
