A new immersive virtual reality (VR) experience has arrived in Brisbane, transporting visitors 4500 years into the past to explore the hidden wonders of Ancient Egypt.
Horizon of Khufu launched last month at Fever Hub Brisbane in Fortitude Valley through a partnership between French immersive content company Excurio and live-entertainment platform Fever.
CEO of Excurio Fabien Barati said that Horizon of Khufu had been extremely well received across the globe by people of all ages.
“With ‘Immersive Expeditions’, we aim to make time travel a reality and bring the world’s wonders to your doorstep,” Fabien said. “We hope you, too, will be captivated by this once-in-a-lifetime journey through Ancient Egypt.”
Exploring Ancient Egypt in Virtual Reality
Guided by a virtual host, visitors enter a shared VR play space where they are transformed into life-sized avatars.
They will then take part in simulations showcasing different aspects of Ancient Egypt, including real locations that the public is unable to access in real life. The experience includes soaring over the Giza Necropolis at sunrise, ascending the Great Pyramid of Khufu and exploring its burial corridors and chambers, and entering the Queen’s Chamber during an embalming ceremony, where participants encounter the goddess Bastet.
Visitors can also embark on a boat journey along the Nile River, attend the funeral procession of Khufu, discover the tombs of the pharaoh’s inner circles, and stand on the sands of Giza to witness the Great Sphinx, before finishing with a nightfall visit at the Great Pyramid of Giza.
Excurio’s technology enables participants to see and interact with one another throughout the 45-minute expedition.
Developed with guidance from Egyptologist and Harvard University professor Peter Der Manuelian, the experience draws on verified data from the Giza Project to recreate the pyramids and surrounding sites, aiming to deliver an authentic representation of Ancient Egyptian history and architecture.
