An Electrifying Evening

Get your glow sticks ready on Saturday, 7 September 7 from 4pm to 8pm at Kallangur State School’s Glow Fest. Kids will delight in the DJ and giant illuminated jumping castle, while friends and family can enjoy the entertainment, food trucks and market stalls. The gold coin entry supports the school’s chaplaincy service.

Creative Journaling

Artist Claire Ritchie is set to lead a creative journaling workshop aimed at inspiring art practice and enhancing personal wellbeing. The event will be held on 28 September from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at Pine Rivers Park in Strathpine.

Participants will start at the Pine Rivers Art Gallery, where they will have the opportunity to explore Claire’s exhibition, Pick me. Following the gallery visit, the group will take a short walk to the park to continue the workshop in natural surroundings.

The workshop fee is $20, which includes all materials and light refreshments.

Quirky Pottery Workshop

Get creative in Kallangur on 21 September from 9am to 12pm by making a hand-built, glazed pothead posey planter, totem or wall-art sculpture in a workshop by artist Lisa. Cost is $70 per session (with a second session needed for glazing).

North Lakes No Lights, No Lycra

Dance like no one’s watching, without pressure or judgement on Thursdays at 7pm in an hour of free-form dancing in the dark. Held in the Mango Hill Community Centre, the playlists are curated to all tastes and genres. Wear clothing suitable for dancing or exercising and BYO water. The event is open to everyone from 12 years, but under-18s must be accompanied by an adult. Cost is $10 pp / $8 concession.

What is Hapkido?

Founded by a 9th Dan grandmaster, Hapkido is a Korean martial art teaching self-discipline and respect. Suited to all ages, genders and physiques, Hapkido caters to differing flexibilities and body shapes and is practised standing, sitting or lying down. Members train on Tuesdays and Saturdays at Mango Hill YMCA.

Making a Difference

City of Moreton Bay residents share their backyards with koalas. Pine Rivers Koala Care needs help during the Koala breeding season to ensure koalas survive for future generations. Meet with club members on the fourth Thursday of each month at Club Pine Rivers (second floor) from 7pm to 8pm. Volunteer educational days are held monthly.

To report koala sightings or help koalas in need, call the rescue team on 0401 350 799, 24 hours, seven days/week.

Skate Night

A skate night and sausage sizzle for kids and parents will be held on Saturday, 28 September at 5:30pm at the Mango Hill Community Club Tennis Courts on Chermside Road. BYO skates. All are welcome.

Live AFL Action

Watch the AFL Grand Final live and loud in the Mango Hill Tavern Sports Bar on Saturday, 28 September at 2.30pm. Meat trays and raffles are on offer.

Collaborative Women Unite

Meeting at 9:30am on the first Wednesday of each month, QCWA Pine Rivers is a friendly group of women focused on cooking, craft and fundraising activities. They assist hospitals, medical facilities, schools and community groups.

Psychic & Holistic Expo 

On Sunday, 11 August from 10am to 3pm, step into a realm of wonder and possibility where ancient wisdom meets modern enlightenment. You’ll find psychics, tarot readers, energy healers, crystals, jewellery and essential oils at this Expo held at the North Lakes Hotel. Admission is $3.

Paint Cherry Blossoms

Art lovers won’t want to miss this event at the Kallangur Tavern on Sunday, 18 August at 3pm. Create a cherry blossom masterpiece step-by-step with Peaceful Palette. 

No experience is required. Aprons and materials provided. Limited numbers, so bookings are essential. Class prices start at $45 for repeat customers.

Wetlands Bushcare

Help regenerate the wetland with tree planting, mulching, habitat creation, plant identification and weeding. The Nathan Road Bushcare Group meets at the corner of Morris Road and Wattle Street, Rothwell, on the fourth Tuesday of each month. This month’s event is from 8am to 10am on Tuesday, 27 August. Council provides tools, plants and mulch. Be sure to wear protective clothing (long sleeves and long pants), sunscreen, suitable footwear, and a hat and bring along a water bottle and insect repellent.

Free Dance Program 

Are you aged 65 or older, interested in trying dance classes, or know someone who might be? University of Sydney researchers are investigating the effects of dance on the health, well-being and fall risk of persons 65 years and older. The free ten-week tailored dance class program will be held twice a week at Seasons Kallangur.

Spruce Up Your Ute 

Ute owners will compete on Friday, 2 August during the Pine Rivers Rodeo at the Pine Rivers Showgrounds in Lawnton. Categories include Street Ute, 4WD Ute, Chicks Ute, and Christmas Tree/Best Lit Up Ute. There is a charge of $5 cash per category. Gates close at 6pm. Nominations close at 6.20pm. Judging is at 6.30pm sharp. Overnight camping is available for $20 per vehicle.  

Parent Morning Tea 

Meet other parents on Thursday, 8 August at 10am at a morning tea and breastfeeding information session hosted by the Australian Breastfeeding Association. Learn more about biting, teething and dental care at this event at the North Lakes Community Centre. Breastfeeding counsellors will be available to answer questions.

Calling Young Inventors! 

A Lego Engineering and Robotics Club will be held at Mango Hill State School on Tuesdays from 3pm to 4.15pm until 10 September. Participants will build and program motorised Lego model prototypes of washing machines, power plants, helicopters and animal robots. Learn critical skills for the digital age and explore scientific concepts at these weekly after-school sessions for primary school students.

Antique and Vintage Fair

Bring along your cash to the Northside Collectors Market in Lawnton on Sunday, 25 August from 9am to 2pm. There will be more than 60 indoor and outdoor stalls selling fashion, toys, dolls, china, ceramics, vinyl LPs, vintage clothing, lamps, coins, jewellery, furniture and bric-a-brac. Entry is $6 cash or free for kids under 14 years. Free parking onsite. Disabled access throughout. 

Mango Hill State Secondary College P&C Meeting 

Get involved in the care, learning, and development of this generation of adolescents and the next at the Mango Hill State Secondary College P&C meeting this month. Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting, which will be held on Monday, 19 August at 6.30pm in the iServices Building, Richard Road, Mango Hill.

Racetrack Afternoon Cruise

On Sunday, 14 July feel the thrills of high revs and horsepower with your mates and like-minded enthusiasts while cruising a real racetrack. Blast along the main straight past pit lane at the historic Lakeside International Raceway in two 30-minute lap sessions. Only street-legal registered cars are permitted and safety rules apply. Tickets are $50 per driver ( two sessions for $80). Passengers are welcome – ages 5 years up ($20 for one or both sessions). Spectators are free.

Pine Valley Miniature Railway 

All aboard between 10am and 2.30pm at Warner! Littlies will love unlimited rides on the miniature train at the Pine Valley Miniature Railway. This month’s running day on Sunday, 14 July will be conducted by QSMEE (Queensland Society of Model and Experimental Engineers). A sausage sizzle and canteen refreshments are available at lunchtime. Enclosed footwear is essential. Cost is $15pp (plus 50-cent transaction fee) for unlimited rides.

Worn It, Owned It Markets

Grab a bargain of clothing and accessories at pre-loved prices and help support the Variety Club of Australia charity at the Worn It, Owned It Market on Saturday, 20 July. Everything pre-loved is for sale. The markets run from 8am to 12pm at Old Petrie Town, 901 Dayboro Road, Whiteside.

Plant a Tree with Your Dog 

Sunday, 28 July is National Tree Day. It’s Australia’s largest tree planting and nature care event and there’s a local event that will run conjointly with Pooches in the Park in Kallangur. Get your hands dirty and plant a tree as a legacy for future generations while enjoying the Pooches in the Park event at Penson Park between 8am and 12pm. Free entry.

Worm Farming at Home 

Discover how easy it is to keep worms, reduce waste and enrich and improve the garden and soil with Brian “The Worm Man” Donaldson, plus information on how to start and maintain a worm farm. Get up close and personal with our wriggly friends at this free event for adults at Strathpine Library on Saturday, 20 July between 11am and 12pm.

Make A Clay Pinch Pot

Feeling creative? Make a pinch pot using air-dry clay to take home in this beginners’ workshop for adults at North Lakes Library on Tuesday, 30 July. The workshop runs from 11am to 11.30am.

Navigating Your Care

Attention seniors. Discover essential information on what an Enduring Power of Attorney and an Advanced Health Directive means for your needs and wishes at North Lakes Library on Tuesday, 9 July at 10.30am. The event is free but bookings are required. Call the North Lakes Library on 3480 9900.

School Holiday Fun 

City of Moreton Bay libraries host a range of events to keep the kids busy during the holidays. At North Lakes Library on Wednesday, 3 July, you can cuddle a wombat with Martin from Geckos Wildlife, and on Thursday, 4 July you can learn about blue whale poo. Kids can also learn how to draw cute manga monsters’ in the Pokémon style at the Deception Bay Library on Friday, 5 July.

Snow4Kids Festival

Do you want to build a snowman? Experience fresh snow and winter activities at Westfield North Lakes these school holidays. You can build snowmen, throw snowballs and play in fresh snow every Saturday and Sunday in June. There’s snow-themed mini golf to play with family and friends and at night, enjoy the beautiful characters in the winter lights along the winter snow path. Chic for Charity Pre-Loved Clothes Sale

Fashionistas, parents, and charity supporters join forces at the pre-loved clothing and accessories sale to aid Bravehearts’ work against child sexual abuse. Men’s, women’s, and children’s clothing, shoes, backpacks, handbags, and hats are available. Donate clean and tidy items to any Sesame Lane location until Friday, 31 May. Unsold items are donated to Save the Children Fund Op Shop, Margate. Entry is free.

Musical Instrument Petting Zoo

Calling All Mount Carmel College students

Mount Carmel College, Wynnum Central is having a 50-year reunion. The school is searching for past students who may have moved away. The event will take place at the Wynnum Manly Leagues Club on 15 June, celebrating students from the years 1968, 1969 and 1972.
