In celebration of the many achievements and contributions young people make in their communities, young people across Moreton Bay are invited to try their hand at street art this Queensland Youth Week.
Held as back-to-back workshops at the North Lakes Community Hall, participants will hear how experienced artists Oscar Galeano and Maia Cavendish use their unique street art styles to express themselves, and will also receive guidance from each artist in the hands-on workshop.
“Street art is a form of free expression, where your best company is a pencil,” Oscar said.
According to Oscar, unlike graffiti, street art is generally legal, as it typically involves permission or invitations to intervene in public spaces, allowing artists to display their work without problems.
However, beyond what is legal or illegal, the main difference lies in the intention.
“Graffiti is born from identity and the need to mark presence, to say, ‘I am here,’ while street art often seeks to create a more open dialogue with the community, convey a visual message, or transform a space with a more elaborate proposal that is accessible to a wider audience,” he said.
Oscar specialises in calligraffiti, a style that plays between strokes and letters and between brushes and spray cans. For him, self-expression is a space where he can let his emotions flow through colours and strokes.
“It transforms what I feel, like joy, nostalgia, strength, or even difficult moments, into living letters that occupy public space,” he said.
“When I paint, every line has intention and every colour represents a state of mind.
“Sometimes the strokes are soft and fluid; other times they are stronger and more energetic – it all depends on what I am experiencing in that moment.”
Calligraffiti comes from the foundations of lettering, and in the workshop, Oscar will take participants through the basics of letters and how to construct a letter through strokes.
Hands-On Skills: Mastering the Calligraffiti Stroke
Participants will then put this knowledge into practice and create their own calligraffiti masterpiece.
“These workshops are an opportunity to explore new forms of expression, discover different artistic techniques, and connect with street art in a practical and fun way,” Oscar said.
“They foster creativity, self-confidence, and the ability to transform ideas and emotions into visible works of art.”
