Students at Genesis Christian College are preparing to take to the stage in a production of High School Musical, with more than 80 students involved in bringing the show to life.

The musical will run from Thursday, 30 April to Saturday, 2 May and marks a special moment for the school, as it revisits a production first staged more than a decade ago.

Rohan Mills, Musical Producer, said the school was excited to once again perform High School Musical at Genesis.

“It’s incredibly exciting to have High School Musical back on stage at Genesis as a full-length, high-energy production, featuring a live band, dynamic LED screens, spectacular lighting and, most importantly, the incredible talent of our students,” Rohan said.

Preparation for the production has been underway for several months. Auditions were held in Term 4 last year, with rehearsals kicking off at the start of the new school year.

“Rehearsals started with a three-day intensive in the first week of school to start the 2026 year with a bang,” Rohan said. “It even included an alumni session with students from a number of past productions talking to the current students, including a couple from the 2010 High School Musical production.”

Community Collaboration: Sets, Scenery, and Surprises

While the cast is made up of high school students, the whole school community has been involved. Behind the scenes, staff and students have worked together to transform the auditorium into the colourful world of the hit musical.

“A collaborative staff team designs the set concept,” Rohan said. “We have an awesome maintenance and grounds team that constructs sets, which are then finished by our Arts team, including staff working bees on a Saturday and the weekly ‘INK Club’ for student volunteers.”

He said that audiences could expect a high-energy show packed with music, dance and theatrical effects.

“Over 80 students will be on stage singing, acting and dancing, supported by a full live rock band,” Rohan said. “The auditorium will be transformed with stunning sets, costumes and enchanting lighting and visual effects, including a full LED wall. Watch out for some special teacher cameos.”

Primary students have also had the chance to win tickets and canteen passes through a colouring competition, and recently enjoyed a surprise cast flash mob to celebrate the launch of ticket sales.
