Ever wondered what happens to your rubbish? Locals are invited to rethink household waste and discover how unwanted items can be given a new lease of life during the Trash to Treasure Tour this month.
Peek behind the scenes at the Dakabin Waste Management Facility to see how items are reused, repaired and recycled to reduce landfill at this family-friendly event. Participants will learn how everyday actions can create real environmental impact, and how simple choices at home add up to big wins for the planet.
Mayor Peter Flannery said he encouraged locals to register for this once-a-year opportunity to go behind the scenes at one of Council’s waste management facilities.
“The Trash to Treasure Tour offers insight into the full journey beyond the bin, highlighting the real impact of our everyday choices and showcasing the incredible work Council teams do behind the scenes to reduce landfill,” he said.
An Annual Behind-the-Scenes Experience
“What started back in 2009 has grown into a much-anticipated annual tour, giving locals a unique chance to see how Council recovers, recycles, and responsibly manages waste.”
Councillor Jodie Shipway (Division 4) said the event was intentionally held on a pupil-free day to make it easier for the whole family to come along and explore the facility together.
“Like many who attend, you might be surprised to discover just how much work goes into managing waste after it leaves the kerb or when it’s dropped off at a waste facility,” Cr Shipway said.
Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Arrive by 12.45pm to arrange booster seats for children who require them.
