The Northside Soul Sisters choir are tuning up for a ‘true blue’ performance, as they present Mate: A Celebration of Australian Music this month.

The concert will take place at Kallangur Community Hall on Friday, 8 May, in support of a local koala charity – a noteworthy Aussie cause.

President Emma Gough said the not-for-profit community choir decided on the concert theme by consulting with the entire group.

“When the 8th of May fell on a Friday this year, it seemed like the perfect time to make an evening of it and to celebrate our country on ‘Mate’ (May 8),” Emma said. “Then the hard decisions began when trying to narrow down the song choices from the endless great options. Aussie music is just so good!

“We looked for tracks that represented an array of Australian culture across many genres. Just to name a few, we’ve got an 80s anthem, pop, and a sprinkling of the 90s from a band that’s practically Australian and Brisbane royalty.

“Keep an ear out for our rendition of Under the Milky Way in the style of Bebe Bettencourt from the iconic Aussie movie based on the book The Dry. It’s a hauntingly beautiful piece in an original style that captures the quiet awe of the outback night sky.”

The choir is donating half of all ticket sales to Moreton Bay Koala Rescue and inviting attendees to make cash contributions. Emma said that, given koalas’ iconic status in Australia, it made sense for the ‘Mate’ concert to support and promote the cause.

“We call ourselves the Soul Sisters, but we’ve got a soft spot for our Fur Brothers, too,” Emma said.

“We’re helping to ensure that the soundtrack of Moreton Bay continues to include the grunts of healthy koalas in the trees.”

The upcoming show will also spotlight fresh talent, with new members joining since February’s open night – some singing in public for the first time since high school.

“Seeing them find their choir legs and gain the confidence to perform is one of the most rewarding parts of this journey,” Emma said.

She said the Soul Sisters hoped the audience would leave this month’s show “full of pride for our country, full of connection to their neighbours, and with a heart full of song”.

“If they’re humming an Aussie classic and feeling like they’ve just spent the evening with their best gal pals, then we’ve done our job!” she said. “Our aim is for everyone to enjoy themselves, connect to the music, and support our local community.”
