Walking, riding or scooting to school is a great way for children to build confidence, independence and healthy habits. On National Walk Safely to School Day on 22 May, the focus is on helping students travel safely while raising awareness of road safety.
The initiative encourages parents, carers and schools to talk with children about safe crossings, being alert around traffic and making smart choices, while reminding motorists to slow down and be aware of young pedestrians.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said the day highlights the importance of active travel.
“Council’s Active School Travel Program supports schools, families, and communities to reduce school traffic congestion by encouraging active travel choices such as walking, cycling, scooting, or using public transport to get to school,” he said.
Active travel benefits families and communities
“Walk Safely to School Day is an important reminder that active travel not only increases physical activity but helps to improve the health and wellbeing of students and their families or carers. It also reduces traffic congestion around schools, lowering the risk of accidents and vehicle emissions.”
North Lakes mum Sarah said walking to school was a great opportunity for exercise and connection.
“Walking to and from school gives us time to chat, and it’s much nicer than sitting in a line of traffic,” she said. “As the kids get older, I’m excited they’ll have the confidence to make the journey on their own.”
