A colourful celebration of creativity, compassion and community spirit is set to unfold as the Deception Bay Helping Hands Quilters present their Quilt Show again this month.

The event, set for Saturday, 12 July, at the Deception Bay Uniting Church, will showcase the talents of local quilters while supporting a range of charitable causes, including children’s hospitals, domestic violence support services and grassroots community programs.

Lorraine Smith, one of three coordinators of the Helping Hands Quilters, alongside Lu Evans and Judy Gard, said the show had been operating bi-annually for many years.

“The Helping Hands quilt group has been a missional outreach for Deception Bay Uniting Church for nearly 20 years, sending quilts to Eastern Europe,” Lorraine said. “We started the Quilt Show to showcase what we do and who we give our quilts to, but also to raise much-needed funds for batting, without which there is no quilt.”

Helping Hands distributes quilts to charities such as Mission Australia, Frontier Services in Western Australia, and Cottage by the Sea in Victoria, as well as to support workers in East Timor.

A Stitch in Time for a Worthy Cause

“Our quilts often come with a story,” Lorraine said. “For example, half-finished quilts where a friend has died and we finish them off. We have a 95-year-old wonderful local lady still sewing quilts for others and also quilts made as folk are dealing with loss or injury, and sewing is their way forward.

“Over 30 ladies meet twice a month at the church to sew, by hand or by machine, as well as knitting and crocheting, and many ladies finish off quilts for us in their homes but are still counted as Helping Hand members.”

Visitors to the Quilt Show will have the chance to see the handmade quilts before they are donated, take part in quilt pattern demonstrations and enjoy Christmas in July crafts.

“Reasonably priced quilts will be available for purchase,” Lorraine said. “Kathy will be showcasing her wonderful style of quilts, and morning tea will be included in the $10 entrance fee.

“A huge selection of books, craft and plants will also be for sale – something for everyone. If you are interested in joining the work of Helping Hands, there will be a sign-on book to leave your details or talk to any of the girls wearing HH name tags. Love to see you there!”
