Explore the curious, the creative and the unconventional at a special Halloween-themed indoor market this month.
The inaugural Brisbane Alternative Market will be held at Pine Rivers Showgrounds on Saturday, 24 and Sunday, 25 October, featuring around 50 vendors showcasing oddities, entomology, dark art, gothic jewellery, and more.
Ash Hardy, co-founder of Brisbane Alternative Market and Hardy Oddities, said he and his wife, Chelsea, created the event to provide a more accessible experience for neurodivergent people.
“We have been waiting for years for someone to create a market like this,” Ash said. “After a while, we realised we had to roll up our sleeves and create one ourselves. Since we had control over what this market could be, we decided to make it as accessible and neuro-affirming as we possibly could.”
The market will feature a traffic light system, allowing attendees and vendors to wear green, yellow or red stickers to indicate their preferred level of communication.
A sensory hour will run from 3pm to 4pm both days, with lower volume and a more peaceful atmosphere.
All vendors have also agreed to a strict policy prohibiting AI-generated artwork and mass-produced products.
A Creative and Inclusive Market Experience
Costumes and cosplay are encouraged, although strict rules apply to props and weapons.
“My hope is that those attending wear their heart on their sleeve, whether that’s being decked out in leather and lace, dressed up as their favourite horror icon, or rocking the classic band shirt and jeans combo,” Ash said.
Ash said events like the Brisbane Alternative Market were important for independent makers and artists.
“By having these sorts of events, we can continue to nurture a community built on being alternative,” Ash said.
Among the vendors will be Kalamity and Kaos, with owner and creator Kitt describing the stall as a “dopamine trip of nostalgia, maximalism and sustainability”.
“I have hundreds of weird and beautiful art prints, handmade and upcycled clothing for the person who loves a statement piece, and so many pins, earrings, necklaces, bags and hats made from thrifted, upcycled and reclaimed fabrics and ‘bits’ from the past,” Kitt said.
Ash said attendees could “expect the unexpected”.
“And if looking for a unique gift idea, meeting an eclectic mix of creators, or just having a browse at the various curios, there is no better place,” Ash said.
Tickets are $10 for one day or $18 for both days, with children under 12 free. Get your tickets here.
