Wallet Wins with Janine
My friends call me ‘thrifty’, some call me ‘tight’, yet I am the person they come to when they’re on a budget and want to spend less and save more. I don’t gatekeep, so each month I will share my top tips for saving money across north Brisbane so you can save money too!
Too Good To Go (in the bin!)
I am currently obsessed with the Too Good To Go food app. I’ve fed dinner to four people for $9.99!
The concept is simple: local cafés, bakeries, restaurants and supermarkets sell their surplus food at heavily discounted prices instead of throwing it away. You purchase a “Surprise Bag” through the app – usually at a fraction of the original cost – then collect it at a set time. You won’t know exactly what you’re getting, but that’s part of the fun. It’s a win-win: businesses recover some costs, perfectly good food stays out of landfill, and you score quality meals or groceries for much less than retail price.
From locations across north Brisbane, I have enjoyed two lots of bakery items for $9.99, rice paper rolls (six) for $8.99 and a bag of supermarket goodies for $6.49. So far, we have loved everything in our bags. Be warned, the best ones sell out quickly, so use their reminders to get notified when a new bag is up for grabs!
Free 7/11 Slushies
Origin customers should check the rewards section of their account for the free 7/11 slushie on offer until the end of March. If sugar and e-numbers are your thing, then this one is for you! Grab one free large slushie every week by scanning the barcode in-store. Winning!
Next month, I will share all my favourite places across north Brisbane where kids eat free!
