From tranquil waters and abundant wildlife to adrenaline-fuelled adventure, Lake Kurwongbah is a hidden gem where you can do as much or as little as you please. This scenic freshwater lake offers a peaceful escape, inviting you to relax, explore and soak up Moreton Bay’s natural beauty.

While it serves primarily as a drinking water supply, the lake also offers a range of recreational activities, from fishing and kayaking to walking, birdwatching and jetskiing.

Bring a blanket and enjoy the view across the calm waters while spotting native birds and other wildlife. Parking is available at Mick Hanfling Park, Torrens Road, where picnic shelters, grassy banks, toilets and shaded areas make it a perfect spot for a morning coffee, leisurely picnic or a sausage sizzle on the BBQs.

Paddlecraft enthusiasts can bring kayaks, canoes or stand-up paddleboards to explore the lake’s tranquil waters. Launching from designated areas at Mick Hanfling Park, paddlers can enjoy wildlife sightings while taking a gentle, relaxing paddle.

Shoreline fishing is another popular activity for all ages. With a valid fishing permit, visitors can fish from the shoreline or from a paddlecraft in the designated paddlecraft zone, targeting species such as bass and perch. These well-maintained areas make fishing a fun, family-friendly activity.

Adventure and Heritage: Clubs and the Historic Lakeside Park

For those seeking a little more excitement, jet skiing and waterskiing are permitted for members and guests of the Lake Kurwongbah Water Ski Zone and Waterski Queensland. The Pine Rivers Rowing Club also operates on Lake Kurwongbah, with its clubhouse located on Dayboro Road.

The area holds a unique piece of motorsport history. Lakeside Park, formerly Lakeside International Raceway, sits on the northern shore. Motorsport fans will appreciate its historic significance in Queensland racing. The venue now operates as a grassroots motorsport park, so be sure to check event details online.

Nearby, Pine Rivers Golf Club offers another way to enjoy the scenic surroundings, making the area a hub for a variety of outdoor leisure activities.

Whether you’re paddling at sunrise, enjoying an afternoon picnic, contemplating the meaning of life while fishing, or just looking for a quiet escape, Lake Kurwongbah offers a relaxed yet rewarding day out just a short drive from North Lakes.
