Local teen Audrey Black is ready to take her cheer skills to the world stage, representing Australia at the world championships.
The 16-year-old will compete as part of Team Australia’s Junior All Girl team at the ICU (International Cheer Union) Junior World and World Cheerleading Championships, held from 22-24 April at ESPN’s Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando, Florida.
Audrey said representing Australia was a huge honour.
“Last year I was chosen, but unfortunately broke my hand six weeks before I was meant to compete, which was extremely disappointing,” she said. “Because of that, making the team again this year feels even more special. It felt like all the hard work, rehab, and determination paid off, and I’m extremely grateful to have another opportunity to represent Australia on the world stage.”
Audrey has been a cheerleader for eight years and has trained and competed with Athena Cheer Academy at Lawnton for six of those years.
“Athena has played a massive role in my development, both as an athlete and as a person,” she said. “The coaches and teammates have pushed me to be my best, and the supportive environment has made cheerleading such an important part of my life.
“I’ve also coached at Athena for the last three years, and that experience has continued to help grow my love for the sport and deepen my understanding of the fundamentals required to be a good, coachable athlete.”
Audrey’s weekly training schedule includes cheer training, stunting drills and sequences, tumbling, and routine runs allocated by her coach, as well as strength training and conditioning to stay strong and prevent injury.
“Team Australia training also involves three weekend training camps in different states, where every team comes in to train as a full group,” she said. “Training at this level requires a lot of commitment, time management, and dedication.”
Support a Local Star: The Elton Experience Fundraising Event
To help fund her trip overseas, Audrey and her family will host a fundraising event at North Lakes Community Centre this month. The event includes a performance by Greg Andrews in the Elton Experience Show. Tickets include a light supper and champagne on arrival for adults, with prizes up for grabs, including two return domestic airfares anywhere on the Virgin Australia network and offers from local businesses.
“The fundraiser will help support my journey to the World Championships, and it’s a great opportunity for people to learn more about cheerleading, show their support, and contribute to making this experience possible,” Audrey said.
