It’s time to plant!
March signals the cooling off of the worst of summer – working outside is much more pleasant, and it is the perfect time to plant a wide variety of cool-season herbs and vegetables.
This is what you have been preparing your soil with organic fertilisers and mulch for. You now have a lovely bed to sow seeds or plant seedlings in. Don’t worry if you haven’t done much soil preparation; there is still time to catch up.
Before we list all the herbs and veggies that can go in now, let’s not forget strawberries. If you are planting runners, ideally buy stock certified as disease-free. Buying small potted strawberry plants is easier but more expensive.
What to Plant Now: Veggies, Herbs and Strawberries
For veggies, try tomatoes, capsicums, eggplants, lettuce, radish, carrot, beetroot, silverbeet, beans, peas, cucumber, zucchini, cabbage, broccoli, turnip, onions, and garlic.
Radishes are very encouraging to the new vegetable gardener – they only take three weeks to grow and can be used in many ways, including roasted, raw in salads, pickled, and sauteed. Use the leafy radish tops to make a delicious pesto.
Herbs to plant now include parsley, coriander, dill, mint, lemon balm, rosemary, thyme, oregano and chives. Ensure soil is well-drained and water regularly.
Enjoy!
