For more than 30 years, the Pine Rivers Municipal Brass Band has been striking a chord across Brisbane’s northern suburbs.
What began back in 1992 as a vision of a group of passionate local musicians has now grown into a beloved fixture in the local community.
The Pine Rivers Municipal Brass Band performs everywhere – from fetes and local celebrations to retirement villages and aged care homes, and it also hosts two major concerts each year – bringing music to audiences of all ages.
Remarkably, three of the original members are still part of the band. Among them is Kerrod Atfield, one of the founding four, who continues to play the tuba while serving on the committee.
Reflecting on a memorable moment in the band’s history, he said, “In 1999, the Mayor at the time, Yvonne Chapman, suggested we change our uniform colours from maroon to council green or blue to better reflect the Pine Rivers Council. That’s when we got our green jackets.”
Meanwhile, Musical Director Graham Drane explained how the band keeps the music alive.
“We rely heavily on Council grants and donations from playouts or sponsors to cover operational costs, and we really appreciate the community’s support,” he said.
The band is also looking to the future, with hopes of expanding and exploring new performance opportunities in the City of Moreton Bay, especially for younger audiences.
Band secretary Annyce Turlea, who started playing tenor horn at just 11 years old, said the group encouraged aspiring musicians of all ages, whatever instrument they could play.
“We’ve had players as young as nine to those well into their 90s,” she said.
Rehearsals take place every Wednesday from 7.30pm to 9.30pm at Rothwell Community Hall, but the band will be returning to its home at Strathpine Community Centre later this year.
