Looking for an exciting family day out? Lake Samsonvale Watersports Association (LSWSA) is holding its Open Day this month, welcoming everyone from complete beginners to seasoned sailors.
LSWSA is a family-friendly club that caters to beginners, including children, while also offering challenges for experienced sailors.
Member and Open Day coordinator J Price said his wife loved to SUP (Stand-Up Paddleboard) while he went sailing.
“Sometimes she just relaxes on the club deck, watches the races and reads a book,” he said. “We really love coming here and have made lots of new friends.”
The Open Day will feature watersport activities for all ages. A highlight of the day will be the ‘Amazing Race’, designed for family teams. Participants will tackle challenges, answer simple questions and have the chance to try sailing, paddling or radio-controlled yachting. Those who complete the race will have a chance to win a year’s family membership and other prizes.
Experience Sailing, Fun and Community Spirit
Open Day guests will also have the opportunity to experience sailing on a catamaran or small skiff, explore radio-controlled yachting or try a Sunstate Water Sports paddle craft.
Brisbane Catamaran Centre will also be on hand for Nacra and Maricat enthusiasts, providing advice and demonstrations for those looking to take their sailing to the next level.
A free sausage sizzle will take place from 11am to 1pm, where club commodore Paul Rowell will be on the BBQ ready for a chat. Visitors can also bring a picnic and relax on the grass.
There is a small playground for kids, and members will be hosting guided tours of the club. Toilets and showers are available on-site.
Founded in 1976, LSWSA offers a welcoming environment for a range of vessels, including canoes, kayaks, windsurfers and sailboats. Their Learn to Sail program introduces the sport to kids, with the aim of helping them gain confidence on the water.
Attendees are encouraged to bring swimwear, wet-friendly footwear and life jackets if available. A small supply of life jackets will also be on hand for those who need them.
