Smart Meal Prep Tips for the Busy Season

As the silly season approaches and calendars fill with school events, social catch-ups and festive get-togethers, planning healthy meals every day can feel like added stress.  

Without a plan, many families find themselves turning to takeaways, but a few simple meal prepping habits can help ease the pressure during busy weeks. 

Bek Daley, Founder and CEO of I Hate Cooking, said meal prep begins before you even turn on the oven – it starts with your pantry. 

“If you have a neat and well-stocked pantry, you’re far less likely to double up on ingredients and you can find what you need at a glance,” Bek said. “Once your pantry is organised, think of it as a toolkit. A jar of miso, soy sauce or spice blend can transform plain rice and chicken into something completely different.” 

She added that many people assumed meal prepping meant eating the same dish every night, but that’s not the case.  

“Smart meal prepping doesn’t rely on rigid meal plans – you can prep components that can be used in different ways,” she said. “The same chicken thighs can become simple protein, fried rice, salad or pasta. That’s how you keep dinner interesting without extra effort. Leftovers are great if you enjoy them, but for many people, variety is what keeps them going.”

Simple Strategies to Save Time and Stress 

Bek advised chopping vegetables at the start of the week, preparing protein in batches, and keeping flavour bases like garlic-ginger paste or herb-infused oil in the fridge or freezer. She said these habits save time, reduce stress and make it easier to throw together quick, tasty meals. 

Coming up with meal ideas on the night takes mental energy. Being organised in the kitchen can reduce stress and make evenings run more smoothly. Plan your meals in a notebook or on your phone before you head to the shops so you know what to buy, and have a shortlist of dinner options ready when you get home from work. It’s a simple way to save time, energy and money.
