Join leading sustainability experts, community organisations, green thumbs, conservationists, and more, at Moreton Bay Eco Fest this month.

Returning for its fourth year, the event at UniSC Moreton Bay is a fun, family day out promoting sustainability and eco-friendly lifestyle ideas for the whole community to enjoy.

With 294 kilometres of coastline and estuaries in Moreton Bay, Mayor Peter Flannery said Council was committed to going green as the region grows.

“By learning how our actions affect these spaces and adopting sustainable practices, we can make a real difference to protect our natural environment and reduce our carbon footprint,” Mayor Flannery said.

“And events like Eco Fest give locals the opportunity to learn how simple changes to our daily life can have huge benefits on the environment.”

Expert Insights from Dr Karl on Climate and Action

On the line-up is one of Australia’s most beloved science communicators, Dr Karl Kruszelnicki AM.

Leading a talk on how to fix climate change, Dr Karl said the biggest challenge facing scientists is fossil fuel companies.

“The 2022/23 triple La Niñas on Australia’s East Coast were caused by the 2021 bushfires, which set off cooling of the upper layer of the ocean,” he said.

“This top one kilometre of the ocean is where most of the life is, and the top 50 metres in certain parts experienced cooling, leading to the triple La Niñas that caused billions of dollars to Brisbane over three years.”

According to Dr Karl, the science is clear; the La Niñas were caused by the bushfires, which in turn were caused by global warming.

When it comes to everyday sustainable practices, Dr Karl said he loves to recycle.

“I recycle everything I can because it’s a great first step, I save up potato bags’ worth of soft plastics and take them to my local recycling facility, and I feed paper to the compost bin,” he said.
