A new exhibition takes you Out on the Town, exploring the evolution of evening wear and accessories from the 1920s to the 1980s, and their role in life’s most memorable moments.
The free exhibition, developed by City of Moreton Bay, highlights the styles, silhouettes and colours that have come in and out of fashion and opens at Pine Rivers Heritage Museum this month.
Mayor Peter Flannery said Out on the Town was a fun and engaging way to experience the City’s history through fashion.
“We’re proud of the rich history we have here in City of Moreton Bay, and Out on the Town is helping bring it to life,” he said. “From glamorous gowns to bold fashion statements, this exhibition celebrates the stories and style of generations in our community.
“Locals can explore their own style and creativity through activities where you can create your own wearable art, give lacemaking a go, and join the Creative Hands morning tea, which will be held during Disability Action Week.”
Events and Experiences Beyond the Exhibition
The exhibition will officially open on Saturday, 15 November, with a special event from 10.30am to 12pm featuring a panel of fashion experts discussing the history of evening wear in Queensland. The conversation will be led by the museum’s Collections Officer, who will provide behind-the-scenes insights into the textile collection on display.
The free Creative Hands morning tea on Wednesday, 26 November, from 10.30am to 12pm, invites participants to create a fabric-based self-portrait, with guidance from museum staff.
Also part of the exhibition, Behind the Seams invites visitors to go beyond the display with a free session led by the Collections Officer on Friday, 28 November from 10.30am to 11.30am, offering an exclusive look at the garments up close.
Councillor Ellie Smith (Division 11) said the exhibition “gives our community the chance to explore our heritage, learn something new, making history engaging and memorable.”
“Pine Rivers Heritage Museum at Old Petrie Town celebrates our history, and what has shaped our city,” Cr Smith said. “Exhibitions like Out on the Town bring our local stories to life in fun and interactive ways.”
The Pine Rivers Heritage Museum is open from Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 3pm.
