From intricate brush strokes to carefully interwoven details, the pieces created by finalists in this year’s Moreton Bay Art Prize are sure to evoke emotion.
The Moreton Bay Art Prize is awarded to an artist aged 18 years or over who currently resides in the City of Moreton Bay area or identifies as a Kabi Kabi, Turrbal or Jinibara First Nations person living in Australia. The artworks are on display at Pine Rivers Art Gallery until 19 July, with an Awards Night being held this month.
Three of the finalists, Katrin Terton, Chloe Forbes and Rachel South, are honoured to be a part of the experience.
The Artists Behind the Art: Stories and Inspirations
German-born Katrin is a mixed-media artist based on Bribie Island. Both the natural environment and her background in art therapy inform her creative work. In the case of her piece Whispers of Shelter, Katrin is particularly mindful of how human presence so often comes at the cost of natural habitat.
“I am grateful that my work has been recognised and that I have the opportunity to exhibit alongside a group of highly talented local artists,” Katrin said. “This recognition feels particularly rewarding as it comes after a period of focusing more on my therapeutic work. It also comes after the disruption of Covid, which stopped short my touring solo exhibition of tactile, multi-sensory artworks.
“This moment represents a reconnection with my own arts practice, reinforcing the importance of creative expression in my life. The chance to share my work in this exhibition is both affirming and inspiring, reigniting my commitment to the creative process.”
Chloe’s piece, The Coat of Jazz Women, is a celebration of the history of women and LGBTQ+ people in jazz. Through the medium of knitting and sewing, this artwork unites the names of 63 jazz musicians from around the world who have made significant contributions to the global jazz community.
“My intention was to create a work of art that encourages female identifying and queer jazz musicians to pursue their love of jazz and to provide an engaging and accessible form of education for everyone to learn about the artistry and legacies of these incredible jazz musicians,” Chloe said. “As a young, queer, female-identifying jazz musician, I was inspired to make this artwork when I noticed the underrepresentation of musicians like me in the dominant narrative of written and recorded jazz history. This entrenched gender disparity extended to my class curriculum and band environments at university, which motivated me to do my own research and advocate for equity within the jazz community.”
Basilea is the colourful artwork from the hands of Rachel, who has been painting the majority of her life. It came about after attending one of Sarah Heath’s edible flower workshops at Basilea Living Herbs in Burpengary. Rachel was inspired by Sarah’s enthusiasm and the many flowers growing around her and thought it would make a great painting.
“Usually, I will see an idea or composition and get a strong feeling if it needs to be created,” Rachel said. “ It doesn’t always have reasoning, but that develops through the creation process. We both realised it was a reflection of motherhood, how she arrived to now, motherhood, womanhood, femininity and supporting women in business.
“All I wanted was for this painting to reach a wider audience and bring some joy to the viewer. The prize will allow this opportunity for it to be seen again.”
