Discover more about Moreton Bay’s local and seasonal produce directly from local producers, growers, and makers at this month’s free community event.
Taste the Bay is coming to Frank Nichols Reserve in Warner on Saturday, 14 November, bringing together local food, live music, and activities, with one Woodford-based business becoming a real crowd favourite.
One half of D’lish Real Fruit Icecream, Helen Ferguson, said she and Michael first started the business after 20 years of hydroponic farming.
“We had been hydroponic farming for 20 odd years prior to purchasing the trailer – working seven days a week growing, packing and delivering our products to our customers across South East Queensland,” Helen said.
“The fresh food market changed considerably during that time, so I started working for someone who operated a food van. I loved getting out and about to so many different locations and meeting so many people.”
From Hydroponic Farming to Local Food Truck Success
After realising the appeal of working in a food van, Helen retired from farming and began operating as a food vendor under the brand name D’lish Real Fruit Icecream.
“We adopted the phrase ‘adding a little bit of ‘healthy’ to your tasty treats’,” she said. “Now, we operate two vans and make people smile as they enjoy their ice creams and our other products.”
Helen and Michael have been part of every Taste the Bay event so far and say their favourite thing is being part of the community.
“Seeing people enjoy themselves in a casual setting in their local area (is my favourite thing),” Helen said. “They don’t have to travel far, it is free to attend, and everyone can relax for a while with their family and friends.”
Taste the Bay aims to share the stories behind Moreton Bay’s producers, growers, and makers while offering a free day out for the community.
“The entertainment is always enjoyable, with various activities offered, including taste testing, highlighted products, and demonstrations,” Helen said.
“These events offer opportunities to experience something familiar or new or just something enjoyable in their local area.”
