Car racing enthusiasts can get plenty of four-wheeled fun as the Notta Grand Prix 5 returns to Lakeside Park in Kurwongbah this month, giving families the chance to witness cars racing around a local track.
Mike Charlton, the event organiser, said the community motorsport event offers a different experience from larger racing events, with a focus on fun, strategy, teamwork and getting the most out of each vehicle rather than simply being the fastest.
“It’s a great community event and can be a fun introduction to motorsport for children who love cars, without the crowds and scale of some of the bigger racing events,” he said.
“Teams of four to six drivers share a car, with road-registered vehicles welcome to take part. I expect 30 teams, with about 140 drivers in total, to take part on the day.”
Strategic Racing Rules, Family Viewing, and Circuit Access
Drivers must stick to a minimum lap time of 72 seconds around the 2.41km circuit, meaning they can’t simply put their foot down and race as quickly as possible. Instead, teams need to balance speed with fuel economy and pit stops to travel as far as possible.
The event is held in a controlled motorsport environment, with medical teams on standby and a noise limit in place.
“Families are very welcome,” Mike said. “If you’ve got children who are interested in motorsport, come along, have a look, talk to the racers and ask questions. It’s a great atmosphere.
“You can stay for the whole event or just see a few laps. Families can bring their own chairs, watch from seats in the cafe, or you can pull your car up alongside the race track and watch from your car.”
Young children can bring ear defenders if they are sensitive to noise, but earplugs are also available to purchase on the day. Drivers must be at least 12 years old to take part and have a history of motorsports, but younger children are able to attend as spectators.
Entrance to the event is free and food is also available from the on-site cafe.
