Calling all suburban art lovers! The community is invited to inspire acclaimed artist Phoebe Paradise by contributing ideas and perspectives that celebrate the local area and the people who live in it.
A series of creative workshops will be held across the region, with the next session taking place at Kallangar Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday, 11 February.
Open to families and art lovers of all ages, participants will explore Phoebe’s creative process using analogue techniques, including collage and illustration, to design their own suburban scenes inspired by local architecture, flora and wildlife, with no prior artistic experience required.
Phoebe, who is Brisbane-based, has been commissioned to create a new artwork for the City of Moreton Bay’s Outdoor Gallery at North Lakes Library.
“I grew up in Brisbane, and our surrounding suburbs are such a big part of the lifestyle and visual identity here,” she said.
“Suburban mythology and oral histories are such a big part of my practice. Connecting with communities outside of my own contributes to making my artworks feel truer and represent broader histories of people around Queensland.
“The City of Moreton Bay has the most inspiring biodiverse ecosystems, mixed with the sprawling suburban landscapes and towns that I love to use in my drawings.”
Phoebe said the workshop welcomes art lovers of all skill levels, backgrounds, and age groups.
“Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or parents looking for a little midweek creativity session with the kids, I think you’ll really get a lot out of this day,” she said.
Shaping a New Artwork for City of Moreton Bay
While artworks created during the workshop will not be displayed in the Outdoor Gallery, City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said participants’ ideas will help shape Phoebe’s final piece.
“There are currently half a million residents in the City of Moreton Bay and all of them have an imagination,” he said. “We see different things and have different life experiences, cultures, perspectives, and interests.
“It’s an opportunity for Phoebe to get to know the people and places that make our area unique.
“These insights will inform the details for Phoebe’s finished piece and make it truly reflective of the City of Moreton Bay.”
