Music is a form of storytelling; it brings communities together, and for many, making music is a way of life.
This June, City of Moreton Bay is celebrating the region’s diverse music scene with a series of pop-up events and workshops for Make Music Month.
City of Moreton Bay Mayor Peter Flannery said Make Music Month was a fantastic opportunity to celebrate local talent and bring our community together through the universal language of music.
“With spontaneous jam sessions, interactive workshops and pop-up performances in unexpected places, this free initiative truly captures the vibrancy and creative spirit of our city,” he said.
Joining more than 750 cities in 120 countries for Make Music Day on Saturday, 21 June, North Lakes is hosting one of the month’s biggest events, the Space Sounds micro-festival.
Space Sounds will present a line-up of music tailored for the alternative, indie and youth music scene, with everyone of all ages encouraged to experience and support homegrown local talent.
Spotlight on Emerging Artists
With a focus on young people, Council aims to support pathways for emerging artists and in a densely populated area like North Lakes, young people need activities that resonate with them in spaces they feel comfortable.
The micro-festival provides a pathway for young people and emerging artists to enjoy music in an inclusive space that is not restricted by licensing.
On the bill is rock band Worm Girlz, a local supergroup brought to life by Jade Montgomery, Angie Gale, Isabella Wood-de-Melo, Lauren Rowe and Nikolai Bray.
For the group, making music not only shapes their communities through shared passions but it also strengthens their bonds through the time spent creating and sharing.
“Creating in a band embraces that community and sets the precedent that music is something to be shared, and share we do!” a spokesperson for the group said.
Writing songs with strong messages, Worm Girlz embodies the goal of Space Sounds.
“We want to leave the music industry a better place than we found it by advocating the way of the Wormz – to create safer, more inclusive spaces for music to be shared!” the spokesperson said.
