Get ready to dust off the leg warmers, tease up the hair and embrace a little retro magic, because Old Petrie Town is turning back the clock for a night of disco fever and glowing fun.
The historic village will host its inaugural Disco and Glow night on 24 July, bringing together a live DJ, international street food, market stalls and a big dose of 1980s nostalgia.
For Old Petrie Town market operator Lin Wilson, the event is all about creating an experience that offers something a little different for the community.
“The 80s was my era and it was a great time,” Lin said. “No one had any big issues or problems and it was a fun time with different fashion and some awesome music. I thought why not bring that back, and the town is well-suited for it too with plenty of space and our beautiful rotunda.”
The event will feature a DJ playing 80s tunes from the town’s rotunda, complete with mirror balls, and a dance floor. Glow sticks will be handed out for the kids. Shopfronts throughout the village are also expected to join in the fun by decorating and lighting up their businesses. Visitors are encouraged to embrace the theme, with Lin hoping to see plenty of neon colours, leg warmers, big hair and spandex filling the streets.
Food, Fun and an ’80s Party Atmosphere
Food will feature a selection of international cuisine.
“I’ve got South African food, Mexican food, Malaysian food, Polish and Greek food, as well as loaded fries and wings too,” Lin said. “It will all be set up around the village green, so bring a picnic blanket for dinner, dance to some 80s bangers on the dance floor outside the rotunda, check out the markets and everyone can have some fun for the night.”
But beyond the music and food, Lin hopes the event reminds people what Old Petrie Town is really about.
“We’re a tight-knit group here and we’re all about the community and showcasing what we have,” Lin said. “We want everyone to come in, enjoy the park and see what we have to offer. Let’s all have a bit of fun here. It’s going to be a great night!”
Old Petrie Town also hosts community markets every Sunday.
