Junior runners and volunteers will take centre stage at the Kids Takeover at the Capestone Lake parkrun in Mango Hill this month.
The annual event will take place on Saturday, 12 September, giving young people the opportunity to take on volunteer roles and help deliver the parkrun experience.
Capestone Lake parkrun Co-Event Director Bradley Mitchell said the Kids Takeover parkrun was a chance to celebrate the contribution of young people in the area and the important role children play in the weekly community event.
“We love having our juniors involved at Capestone Lake and it’s great to have an event that celebrates their involvement,” he said.
“We can’t run a parkrun each week without volunteers, and juniors are a big part of every event as we see all ages participating or volunteering regularly.”
This year’s event will be directed by Tammy Keefe, with Junior Run Director Zaira Abdulaziz, the daughter of regular participant Mo, delivering the briefing on the day.
How to Get Involved in the Kids Takeover Parkrun
The course consists of two and a bit laps of Capestone Lake, 5km in total, and all ages and abilities are welcome to participate.
Bradley said the Kids Takeover Parkrun remained open to everyone, with the focus on encouraging juniors to become involved in volunteering and supporting the wider parkrun community.
“This is not a kids-only event,” he said. “The emphasis is on volunteering.
“We aim to have kids in every volunteering role at the Kids Takeover parkrun. Whilst we don’t discourage others from volunteering during those weeks, it is wonderful if we can get as many juniors involved in volunteering positions as possible.”
To register, participants must be four years and over. Children under 11 must be accompanied by an adult, while participants aged 11 and over can take part independently. Adult supervision is required for some volunteer roles, including marshal and tail walker positions, in line with parkrun’s safeguarding requirements.
Volunteers are asked to arrive at 6.30am, and a first-timer’s brief is held at 6.50am.
