Spring has a way of making you want to break out the cleaning gear, don your rubber gloves and freshen up your home.
Dusty corners start to catch your eye, cobwebs on ceiling fans that haven’t been used for months suddenly stand out and swapping the winter wardrobe for summer gear gives you the perfect excuse for a proper clear-out.
The good news is a thorough spring clean doesn’t require a cupboard full of expensive items. Some of the simplest cleaning products are already sitting in your pantry.
White vinegar is a favourite for a simple, lower-chemical clean. Diluted with water, it can help tackle grime and water marks on surfaces such as windows, mirrors and shower screens. Just remember it isn’t suitable for every surface, so avoid using it on natural stone such as marble or granite.
Bicarbonate of soda is another handy household staple. A small amount sprinkled onto a damp cloth can help lift marks from sinks, stovetops and tiles, while it can also be used to freshen carpets, mattresses and upholstery. For fabrics, sprinkle it over the surface, leave it for 20 minutes, then vacuum thoroughly.
Practical Tips to Declutter and Organise Effortlessly
There’s no need to tackle the whole house in a weekend. Pick one room at a time, clear out what you no longer need and set up a simple system for keeping surfaces clear before moving on. Small, finished tasks beat a half-done house every time.
Before buying anything new for your spring clean, take stock of what you’ve already got on hand. Old towels make perfectly good cleaning cloths, reusable containers can help organise cupboards and items you no longer need can often find a second life with someone else rather than heading to landfill. We’re lucky to have plenty of op shops across the Moreton Bay region that welcome donations and help keep unwanted items in use.
Outdoor areas deserve attention too, especially after the cooler winter months. A sweep and mop of the patio, a scrub of outdoor furniture and a tidy of the entertaining spaces will have everything ready for enjoying the warmer months ahead.
A fresher home doesn’t need to come with a bigger grocery bill. By using simple everyday items, making the most of what you already have and avoiding unnecessary purchases, spring cleaning can leave your home feeling refreshed while reducing waste and saving money along the way.
