If you’ve considered raising chickens but aren’t sure where to begin, the upcoming Keeping Backyard Chooks session at North Lakes Library is the perfect opportunity to learn more.

Whether you’re a beginner or already keeping chickens, this free event in May will provide valuable tips and advice.

Led by Claire Bickle, a qualified horticulturist and chook expert, the session covers everything from council regulations and breed selection to housing, feeding and protecting chickens from predators. Claire will also answer questions during a Q&A, making it ideal for anyone starting or expanding their chook-keeping hobby. The session is designed to help people make an informed decision before diving in.

“My presentation isn’t just about getting people started on their own chook-keeping journey and all of the considerations that come with that decision, but it will also be of benefit for the seasoned chook-keeper too,” Claire said.

“I’ll show you how chickens can help you become more sustainable and self-sufficient. Having a few chickens is a rewarding hobby on many levels, plus you take back control over your own supply of eggs!”

Understanding Local Rules and Getting Hands-On Experience

Before getting started, it’s important to understand the regulations regarding poultry. In Moreton Bay, property size determines how many chickens you can keep. For example, properties between 300m² and 600m² can have up to three chickens, while larger properties can accommodate more. There are also rules about housing and care to ensure they don’t become a nuisance to neighbours.

“Do your research on what is involved in keeping chickens and the council regulations,” Claire said. “Educate yourself on all the ins and outs before you get chickens, not the other way round. Chickens are a pet and just like any other animal, they require the same care and attention, including possibly veterinary care, so be prepared to take on the responsibility.”

For a hands-on experience, Claire will bring along one of her chooks, giving participants a chance to see if keeping chickens is right for them.

This session is part of City of Moreton Bay’s Grow It Local program, which encourages sustainable living and local gardening. Bookings are required, so don’t miss your chance to learn everything you need to start keeping chickens in your backyard.
