Carp are large freshwater fish that are native to central Asia. They are extensively farmed around the world and are a popular angling fish in Europe. However, in Australia, carp are considered a significant pest.
While I have not found many in our local creeks and rivers, many places south of Brisbane and inland are infested with them. Their habit of feeding and sifting the bottom for food has detrimental effects on our native aquatic plants, animals and fish, pushing some to extinction.
Catching Carp: Techniques and Baits
Baits such as corn, bread, and earthworms on small, strong hooks are favourites. Growing to over a metre long, they are quite fun to catch with a light fishing rod. The picture shown is a carp in Wyaralong Dam.
