Secrets, biting humour and a disastrous social gathering are set to take centre stage when Act 1 Theatre presents the adult comedy The Opposite Sex this month.
Written by English playwright David Tristram and directed by Lilian Harrington, the play follows two couples whose chance meeting quickly descends into chaos as long-hidden secrets emerge.
Lilian said the play was a well-written, modern English comedy that would give local audiences plenty of laughs.
“David Tristram has the knack of touching on those issues that affect people’s intimate lives in different ways, and his plays are some of the most popular productions seen on the British stage,” Lilian said.
In The Opposite Sex, an ordinary social gathering between Mark, Vicky, Judith and Eric quickly spirals out of control after the group discovers they have more in common than they realised.
Joel Thomas said he was looking forward to playing Mark.
“My character journey has many ups and downs; the dialogue is edgy and saucy throughout the play and working with our director, Lillian, I’m confident we are going to deliver a funny show which the audience will enjoy,” Joel said.
Johancee Theron, who plays Vicky, described her character as “someone who’s desperately trying to keep everything under control while the evening slowly unravels around her”.
“I love ensemble theatre, and this play relies on timing, chemistry and listening,” Johancee said. “It’s the kind of comedy where every character has an important role in creating the tension and humour, which makes it really rewarding to be part of.”
Cast Brings Witty Comedy to Life
Luisa Di Pompo, who plays Judith, said she was excited to return to the stage and work with a great team of creatives.
“I can’t wait to be able to entertain the community and share in many laughs!” Luisa said.
Dan Baker, who plays Eric, said he was looking forward to sharing the chemistry the cast has built.
“While my character, Eric, is a prat – I hope to bring out his worst!” Dan said.
Lilian said one of her favourite aspects of the production was “the quick, witty dialogue…especially the gaffs that are made between Judith, the Avon Lady, and her host, the upper-class yuppy, Vicky, and Judith’s husband Eric”.
“This is a very entertaining play and it will make a fun-filled experience for our local community,” she said.
