National Volunteer Week, from 19–25 May is the perfect time to celebrate the role volunteers play in our communities.

In Moreton Bay, St John Ambulance Queensland (SJAQ) offers a variety of opportunities for locals to get involved, make an impact and develop valuable skills. For over 140 years, St John Queensland has supported those in need, providing lifesaving training and community services. Volunteering with St John allows individuals to contribute to their community while gaining professional development, accredited first aid training and the chance to build lasting friendships.

Opal Halliday, General Manager Community Services, said volunteers played an important role.

“Access to healthcare is a fundamental human right, yet for many older Australians, reliable transport remains one of the greatest barriers,” Opal said. “Our volunteers are vital in bridging this gap, ensuring that older Australians can attend healthcare appointments and stay connected to the community.

“SJAQ’s community support programs are designed to enhance social connections, offering regular visits to aged care facilities and home visits where our volunteers provide companionship, engage in meaningful conversations and offer a listening ear.

“Each volunteer undergoes training, ensuring they possess the skills and knowledge to deliver the highest quality support. We believe that every individual, regardless of age, deserves to feel valued, connected and cared for.”
