If anyone knows that life can certainly take you by surprise, it’s Emma Krause.
With the credits of wife, mum and teacher already tagged to her name, Emma felt she needed something else in her life and made the brave decision to try her hand at comedy. It was a decision that sent her on a wild path that now includes touring the country, with a show coming up at Kallangur Tavern in June.
“I’d ALWAYS wanted to try stand-up comedy, but was too terrified to start,” Emma said. “I didn’t feel like it was a place that I would ‘belong’, that I wasn’t ‘rock n roll’ enough. It was after my 40th birthday that I began – a lot of my material became the frustrations and the exhaustion tied to being a mum, wife, people pleaser. I can’t tell you how much support I received from the women who were in the audience!
“I am so grateful to all the women who have come along to my shows. Without this support of women, who I don’t even know, there’s no way I’d be able to do this.”
Emma Krause: Giving Women the Mic
For Emma, the best thing about being on stage with a microphone is giving women a voice, allowing things to be heard from their perspective and helping them realise they aren’t alone in how they feel.
“At my show, you can expect to feel heard, understood, validated – and a lot of laughter, expect your cheeks to be sore afterwards,” Emma said. “I have many women come up to me after the shows and say, ‘Oh my god, I felt like you were in my head, voicing my thoughts and saying all the things I’ve always wanted to say!’ Some of the themes raised in the show also prompt deeper conversations with the girls afterwards.”
As someone who started comedy later in life, Emma has some advice for those looking to venture onto the stage.
“Definitely just get up there and start,” she said. “Realise you’re going to be really bad to begin with! Voice record your set and listen to it to see what went well (if anything) and what needs work (usually everything) but take the emotion out of how awful you think you are and just start tweaking what needs work and try something else.
“There’s so many comedians who have gotten great because of their ability to work this way. I think if you’re willing to persist and refine what you’re doing and saying, then slowly you’ll get better.”
Long term, Emma would love to pursue a full-time career in comedy, but for now she’s still undertaking relief teaching work, trying to squeeze in time with her kids and also working on comedy craft.
