Horticulture enthusiasts are encouraged to attend another year of Aspley Orchid Society’s Summer Show.

The orchid show will take place at the Pine Rivers Showground Hall for the very first time, marking a significant change from its previous venue in Mt Coot-tha, where it has been held since 1997.

Secretary of the Aspley Orchid Society Inc Roslyn Hunt said this wasn’t the only change patrons could expect at this year’s show.

“Additionally, the event has been condensed into a one-day show,” Roslyn said.

“Other orchid societies are also considering utilising this venue in the future in the hope of positioning the Pine Rivers Showgrounds as a pivotal location for orchid enthusiasts in the northern Brisbane area.”

At this year’s event, patrons can expect a wide array of orchid plants, pots and fertiliser for sale, as well as cultural advice and light refreshments.

A Long History of Orchid Enthusiasm

“(There will be) a wide array of orchids displayed in the competition, which covers 37 classes for more than eight genres,” Roslyn said. “The competition is open to all members of any orchid society and is normally hotly contested.

“Cultural advice refers to instructions on how to grow a specific orchid, as each type has its own requirements for potting media, amount of water, light and fertiliser needed to thrive in a given environment.

“We have experienced growers working in plant sales to assist patrons with choosing their purchase. Additionally, there are also Aspley members roving the display areas to assist with any questions that patrons might have.”

Aspley Orchid Society Inc has been hosting its Orchid Summer Show since 1997, and the club first began in 1976 – with an initial membership of 20.

“The Aspley Orchid Society was formed by interested orchid growers after displays of orchids at events at the Aspley Opportunity School gained significant interest,” Roslyn said.

“Over the years, the society has promoted itself and showcased orchid beauty through displays at various venues. We host two shows annually – one on Mother’s Day weekend at Wavell Heights Community Hall and the other in February.”
