- Threebar Porcupinefish, Dicotylichthys punctulatus
Sometimes called balloon fish or just spiky puffer, these incredible fish are found throughout Moreton Bay and most of the southern east coast of Australia. Quite a common catch when fishing our local jetties and are quite the sight when they puff up as big as a football. They are also curious of divers showing little fear as they follow you around.
SpikyPuffer Warning: Poisonous
Beware though – they are extremely poisonous if eaten and although the spines are not toxic to touch, they can take a small finger off with the pair of fused teeth used for chewing crabs and breaking shells. They can also be deadly to dogs if they decide to snack on a dead one that has washed up on the shore.
