Wear a cape, fluoro colours, a tutu or all three to help celebrate the one-year anniversary of Capestone Lake parkrun this month!

Parkrun is the fun, friendly and free way to enjoy the outdoors, get some exercise and meet other people. It is super inclusive – runners, walkers, families, people with dogs and babies in prams are all welcome.

Event director Brad Mitchell started the Capestone Lake parkrun at Mango Hill a year ago, but it was by no means his first experience of parkrun.

“I’d been doing parkrun for quite a few years for health reasons,” Brad said. “My parkrun journey began at Sandgate and then eight years ago, I started the Redcliffe parkrun.

“A few years ago, we built our house at Capestone Lake and I saw that the 2.5 kilometre circuit around the lake was perfect for parkrun (always five kilometres) if we went around twice.

“It took two years to get parkrun established here, as the startup costs are $5500 for facilities, etcetera, so it can be free to participants. Urbex, the developers of Capestone Lakes, offered funding for half, and we successfully applied for an AusBuild Grant for the rest.

“While the first parkrun attracted about 400 people, mainly because parkrunners from other locations love to try out a new course, we now average 80 to 100 each week.”

More Than Just a Run

Parkruns are well organised, with volunteers at various spots along the course, ensuring everyone’s safety and well-being. Participants are timed and many get a real sense of success from improving their personal best as their fitness improves. However, this isn’t so daunting when the onus is on participation rather than competition. Participants are encouraged to go at their own pace and they are in good company.

One smiling face regularly seen at Capestone Lake parkrun is that of sometimes-runner, sometimes-volunteer, Jilly Stansfield.

“I love parkrun for the strong sense of community and I’ve made some great friends,” Jilly said. “I enjoy giving back to parkrun through volunteering and Hannah, my pup, loves it too!”
