The literary favourite, Australian Poetry Slam, is returning to City of Moreton Bay.

This month, passionate storytellers and wordsmiths will have a hand at slam poetry alongside the event host, award-winning artist Angela Peita.

“I love slam poetry because it can be anything,” she said.

“Unlike genre-based poetry, slam gives people a platform to talk about anything that inspires them. It could be something funny or serious, it doesn’t matter.”

A Stage for Storytelling and Self-Expression

Slam poetry is an open mic competition where writers perform their original poem in front of a live audience, where it is then judged.

What makes slam extra special is that the audience is the judge.

“There will be five audience members who have come along that night, having no idea they will be a judge,” Angela said.

“What’s so great about the audience judging is you, as an audience member, get to decide whether a poem connects with you and whether you thought it was a well-told story.

“It’s more about how much you loved the story rather than the technical jargon of what a poem should be.”

Angela has performed around Australia and overseas, appearing at festivals like Woodford Folk and Jungle Love. She was the slam People’s Choice Award winner at the Bellingen Writers’ Festival and most recently, was a nominee for the Paul Sherman Community Poetry award.

Angela said she fell in love with slam when her expectations were exceeded at her first event more than a decade ago.

“I turned down my first slam event invite, thinking it would be another traumatic high school English class experience, but it was nothing like that at all,” she said,

“It was people getting up and telling stories and connecting with each other.

“It’s just storytelling in a fun way that has poetic devices woven through it as a secondary component to the art form.”

With no prior experience necessary and workshops available, Angela encouraged everyone to get involved.

“The first time is terrifying because public speaking is scary, but you just have to give it a go,” she said.
