Keep an ear and eye out for this magical, mysterious fellow!

Frequently found at the Witches Night Markets, including this month at Petrie School of Arts, Garaham Greybeard is an oak sprite, a benevolent forest spirit with a mischievous streak. Nothing brings more joy to this roving minstrel than people dancing to his medieval and renaissance music as he plays the pipe and tabor.

Garaham Greybeard said his appearance – of a mystical creature playing jolly tunes – brings joy and wonder to folk both young and old.

“Dressing in medieval garb, I wear a leather masquerade-style oak sprite mask and adorn my legs and tabor with vine leaves,” he said.

“The pipe and tabor are also medieval. The pipe is a three-holed flute played with one hand. The tabor is a small snare drum suspended from the wrist of the hand playing the pipe. Rhythms are played on the tabor with your free hand.”

A Fantasy Name with Real-Life Charm

Garaham said his character name originated from a misspelling of his name Graham in a work email.

“At the time, we joked about it sounding Arthurian,” he said.

“Now I’m older with a greying beard, I thought the name Garaham Greybeard appropriate, as it conjures images of a character from a fantasy novel.”
