You might have heard of Men’s Sheds but did you know that Women’s Sheds are just as active in the community?
The Moreton Bay Women’s Shed (MBWS) has been in existence for over two years (with membership growing to almost 200 strong) in order to “offer women from all walks of life, life experiences and stages of life the opportunity to meet other women, make friends and participate.”
The isolation felt during the COVID lockdown period before 2022, according to Wendy McHugh, Secretary at MBWS, was the catalyst for a group of local women to organise a meetup with the help of the community’s infrastructure.
“The Pine Rivers Showgrounds at Lawnton offered the Moreton Bay Women’s Shed the hire of a small building for a very reasonable rent from August 2022 and they have been the champion of MBWS ever since,” Ms McHugh said.
Building Community and Connection Through Workshops and Social Events
Ms McHugh said that the Women’s Shed offered a location where women could catch up every week, have a chat, be part of a group and engage in a variety of interests and pastimes (should they so desire).
“MBWS members often present the workshops for members and in this way the costs are kept as low as possible to allow everyone (who wants) to try something new,” Ms McHugh said.
“But you don’t have to be ‘crafty’, as many members only attend social events and activities.”
A plethora of events, ranging from informal get-togethers like morning teas to exciting excursions to popular tourist destinations and festivals, take place in tandem with regular activities like glass painting, scrapbooking, decoupage, patchwork, hand crocheting and essential oil use.
“Each month there is a day bus trip and another outing such as a picnic or BBQ or the Redcliffe Heritage Walk, and we do such things as visit Osprey House or Old Petrie Town,” Ms McHugh said.
Alongside this, the ladies find many ways to give back to the community, including fundraising for the Biggest Morning Tea for Cancer Council and a Christmas donation program.
