Lake Samsonvale, near Petrie, offers a tranquil escape from the busy pace of everyday life. The picturesque setting, also known as the North Pine Dam, provides drinking water for the region and is home to an abundance of flora and fauna. With activities for all ages, Lake Samsonvale is a great destination for a relaxing day out.

The impressive dam wall stretches 580 metres long and 40 metres high, with five steel gates controlling the water release. Around the sprawling lake, you’ll find several entry points offering a mix of facilities and ample parking.

If you’re planning a picnic or BBQ, there are plenty of shaded tables and BBQ areas with incredible lake views. Toilets are available, so you can settle in for a full day on the water’s edge. Families with little ones will love the playgrounds at McGavin View and Bullocky Rest.

For those who enjoy a good walk, a scenic trail links the picnic areas at Bullocky Rest and Forgan Cove (off Forgan Road, Joyner). On the opposite side of the lake, the Postman’s Track Trails offer over 5 kilometres of bushwalking trails to explore.

Wherever you decide to pitch up, be sure to keep an eye out for local wildlife. You’ll find plenty of birdlife on and off the water, as well as the occasional koala perched in the trees above the picnic tables.

Activities on the Water

The lake is divided into zones, so check the rules before you embark on any water-based activities.

Fishing is permitted from the shore in designated areas (permits required). You can fish from Bullocky Rest, Forgan Park, Forgan Cove, Tukuwompa Park, McGavin View and Kobble Creek. If you prefer to fish from the water, paddle craft fishing is allowed in Zone 2.

Kayaking and canoeing are popular activities for all ages, with a designated launch point at Forgan Cove. Be sure to stay in Zone 2 (marked by buoys) and don’t land on the lake’s edge anywhere else.

Motorised boats and jet skis aren’t allowed on the lake. Members and guests of the Lake Samsonvale Watersports Association are permitted to access Zones 3 and 4 for boating and sailing.

Whether you’re looking for a peaceful day by the water or an action-packed outdoor adventure, Lake Samsonvale offers the perfect escape. Plan your visit and discover this hidden gem just moments from home.
