In a significant boost to the Moreton Bay community, the University of the Sunshine Coast will open a free tax clinic at its Petrie and Caboolture campuses in early 2025.

Funded by the Australian Government’s National Tax Clinic Program, the clinic will receive $292,522 over the next three years to provide essential tax assistance to small businesses and individuals facing financial and social challenges.

Providing Accessible Tax Support and Training Future Professionals

The initiative is designed to support those who might otherwise struggle to access professional tax advice. Eligible clients, including small business owners and disadvantaged individuals, will be able to consult UniSC students under the supervision of licensed professionals for assistance with tax returns, business registrations, and navigating online tax tools like MyGov.

“This clinic will not only provide vital support to those in need but also offer valuable work experience for our students, many of whom will contribute to the future workforce of Moreton Bay,” said UniSC Vice-Chancellor Professor Helen Bartlett as she highlighted the dual benefits of the program.

Dr Peter Baxter, UniSC’s Accounting Undergraduate Program Coordinator, explained that the clinic will address a critical need within the region.

“Moreton Bay is home to a diverse community, including many who may be unfamiliar with Australia’s tax system,” Dr Baxter noted. “Additionally, the number of small businesses in the area means there is a growing demand for accessible tax support.”

The clinic will offer services ranging from tax file number registrations to assistance with business activity statements, providing an invaluable resource for the community while fostering the next generation of tax professionals.
