Iconic Aussie television show Mother and Son is coming to a stage near you.
With plenty of laughs and a talented cast, Mother and Son is being brought to life at ACT1 Theatre by Michelle Whitmore, who is making her directorial debut.
“Directing the stage version of Mother and Son has taken me on a nostalgic journey back to my childhood, where I fondly remember watching shows like Are You Being Served? and Keeping Up Appearances,” Michelle said. “As a self-professed actress, I’ve had the pleasure of performing in stage productions of these beloved shows. Now, having the opportunity to direct Mother and Son, I believe it will not only delight audiences but also attract new patrons to community theatre, thanks to the show’s enduring appeal.”
A Talented Cast and Nostalgic Journey for Fans
Michelle has deep roots in the world of theatre. She feels that acting is her destiny, a talent inherited from her late father.
The theatre is Michelle’s ‘happy place’ and she said her primary goal was to provide the audience with an outlet to escape from the craziness of the real world. Directing for the first time has stirred up lots of feelings, but also a big sense of accomplishment.
“Choosing a great cast is half the battle won and I’m incredibly fortunate to have such talented actors on board,” she said. “Additionally, I couldn’t do this without the support of some amazing people. My wonderful husband, Mark, is invaluable, helping me thrash ideas around, supervising the set construction and taking charge of the lighting. Our stage manager, Deb Hossack, thinks of absolutely everything and keeps us all on track, while our sound guru, Andrew Munslow, ensures everything sounds perfect. Together, they make this daunting task not only manageable but also a great learning experience that will ignite a desire to direct more productions and add another feather to my cap of achievements.”
The audience can expect the stage production of Mother and Son to be a faithful adaptation of the much-loved television show, staying true to the original humour and character dynamics, especially the cunning Maggie and deceitful and womanising Robbie.
“While the essence of the original series is preserved, the stage version also introduces new material and updates the setting to the modern age, incorporating elements like mobile phones and Skype sessions,” Michelle said.
Sheryl Salmon, who plays the lead role of Maggie Beare, said she was a big fan of the television show.
“Loved this iconic show back in the day,” she said. “I feel very honoured to be a part of this wonderful cast and to do my bit to bring laughter to the lives of our audiences.”
For fellow castmate Adrian Fetzer, who is taking on the role of Arthur Beare, it’s a role he relates to.
“I’m looking forward to playing Arthur as I love the humour and feel a bit of connection with him becoming a family member’s carer,” Adrian said.
