Getting Caught up in Fur and Feathers

If the idea of a furry volunteer role appeals to you, here’s one to get tails wagging.

It’s no secret that volunteers are the lifeblood to many organisations and the RSPCA Dakabin Animal Care Centre is no different.

Having been at the centre now for 10 years, devoted volunteer Noel Roberts can’t imagine doing anything else.

“It all started after I retired from full-time work,” Noel said. “After spending about a week at home, my wife said ‘for Pete’s sake go and find something to do!’ So I ended up at the Dakabin shelter helping to take care of the dogs.

“I did that for about 12 months, but I felt as though I needed a bigger challenge, so I spoke with management who suggested I try admin. Having never worked in a reception area before I didn’t think it would be for me, but here I am 10 years later.”

For Noel, the opportunity to make a difference is a big part of why he turns up as a volunteer. His role encompasses the onboarding and orientation of all new volunteers at Dakabin.

“Helping animals find loving homes provides a deep sense of satisfaction and purpose,” Noel said. “You also get to work with other volunteers, fellow animal lovers with similar interests who share your passion.”

The Importance of RSPCA Volunteers at Dakabin Animal Care Center

As the assistant animal care manager at Dakabin, Dijanna Tramontin highlights the importance of having volunteers on board.

“We simply could not achieve what we do and the incredible outcomes without volunteers,” she said. “Volunteers are the supporting beams that help RSPCA – the people, the animals and the community.

“At our Dakabin facility we need 20-30 volunteers each day to assist with the cleaning, feeding and cuddle time of our animals. But some days we have as little as half those numbers. More hands make lighter work and more time for the animals to have quality time spent with people.”

Don’t worry if you think need experience to volunteer at the shelter as it’s not required.

“Across our many centres there are numerous roles available, almost something to suit everyone,” Dijanna said. “From animal care, to laundry assistance, administration, maintenance and gardening, animal transport driving, animal rescue and so much more. We offer all of the training and guidance needed for each role our volunteers choose.”

If you need any convincing about volunteering, Noel will certainly ruffle your feathers…in a nice way, of course!

“To someone thinking of volunteering I would say do it! You will feel rewarded many times over,” Noel said. “The joy and satisfaction of seeing a timid, frightened animal blossom into a confident, happy pet are priceless. Knowing you played a part in their transformation is incredibly fulfilling.”
