Progressing to high school from primary school brings about many changes for children.

These changes can be especially difficult for neurodiverse children to navigate, resulting in stress and anxiety that negatively impacts their education, behaviour and general experience of high school. So, as a parent, how can you help prepare your child for as smooth a transition as possible?

Connor M Greene, ADHD Specialist and author of ADHD Explained, and Sara Hocking of See Beyond, invite you to Preparing your ASD/ADHD Child for High School, to help equip you to guide and support your child through this process.

Connor said both he and his business partner Sara noticed they received many calls from parents desperate for help at the end of first term this year, as that is when things started to fall apart. This prompted them to put together this seminar, which includes a range of resources, including templates, interviews and tips on how to assist your child.

“The children weren’t getting their assignments done on time, causing stress and anxiety, but even more difficult for them is the changeover of teachers,” Connor said.

“In primary school, kids have the same teacher every day for the year. In high school, they have many different teachers each day, and some teachers they may have for only an hour each week. They don’t get to know the teachers like they used to, and this can be difficult for neurodivergent kids to navigate.”

Practical Strategies for Parents and Carers

Sara said that the seminar would help parents and carers support their child by building an environment specific to their needs.

“We help families develop practical strategies for daily life,” she said, adding that the strategies were designed to alleviate the strain on the children and reduce the demands on them to succeed with independence.

“It also reduces stress for the carers by understanding the best strategies and tactics for THEIR circumstances.

“We also help parents ensure their children’s support plans and documents from primary school are up-to-date. High schools base their understanding of support needs on these documents, so they need to be as accurate as possible.”
