Looking for a unique and colourful event to brighten your Easter weekend? Don’t miss the Pine Rivers Easter Orchid Show, where you’ll find a breathtaking display of flowering orchids and a chance to learn from expert growers.
Whether you’re a passionate gardener or simply curious about how to get started with your own delicate blooms, this event is the perfect weekend outing for plant lovers. Hosted by the Pine Rivers Orchid Society, a non-profit organisation that has been promoting orchid growing since 1980, the show brings together a welcoming community of plant lovers.
Lynda Brown, Secretary of the Pine Rivers Orchid Society, said she was excited to invite visitors to experience this magical display of flowers.
“I have a shade house in my backyard and have been growing orchids in Murrumba Downs for 30 years,” Lynda said. “Every month, our members gather at Kruger Hall, Kallangur, for a meeting where they ‘bench’ their flowering orchids in a friendly competition. There’s always a cuppa and good conversation while the judges decide the winners and we often have guest speakers sharing their expertise.”
A Must-Visit Event for Orchid Enthusiasts
Twice a year, the society holds its much-anticipated orchid shows, where around 200 spectacular orchids are displayed, all competing for the prestigious champion title. It’s an opportunity to marvel at the variety of blooms and chat with knowledgeable growers eager to share their insights.
“We’re more than just a club for orchid growers,” Lynda said. “It’s about community, friendship and connections formed through a shared love of orchids.”
At the show, visitors can also purchase a variety of orchids, pots, fertilisers and accessories, making it the perfect place to start or expand your collection. Potting displays on both days provide hands-on learning for beginners.
Want to get started growing your own orchids? Lynda suggested joining the Pine Rivers Orchid Society’s New Growers Group for support.
“Ensure your orchids have a shade house or protected patio, water them in the morning, allow for good drainage and fertilise once a week for healthy, thriving plants,” she said.
Entry to the show is $4 (free for kids) and with a spacious, wheelchair-accessible venue at Kallangur State School Hall, this is a family-friendly event. Don’t forget to enjoy a cup of tea and a slice of cake while taking in the beauty of these flowers.
