If you’ve ever gazed up at the stars and wondered how to capture their brilliance, David Magro’s 2025 North Lakes Milky Way Masterclass this month could be your chance to learn how.
David, who is a multi award-winning Australian Astrophotographer, has put together a four-hour workshop, which is designed for aspiring photographers of all levels – whether you’re picking up a camera for the first time, have an interest in space photography, or are passionate about astrophotography.
Queensland-based David, now recognised as Australia’s leading Milky Way Landscape Photographer, first discovered his love for the cosmos after travelling abroad and was based in China for a while.
“The night sky in Australia is so clear and so beautiful,” he said. “I never truly appreciated it until I went overseas and couldn’t see it as clearly.”
Once back home on Aussie soil, David began experimenting with night photography, realising there’s only a small window of time each year when the Milky Way is visible in Queensland at comfortable evening hours – October being one of the best.
“It really is fascinating to see, and you can get some very clear and beautiful shots of the galaxy without the need for any fancy camera,” David said.
How to Learn Astrophotography
As David’s reputation grew – with him earning titles such as Exposure Photographer of the Year in 2017, Australian Ambassador for Sandisk and Western Digital in 2018, coming in second place in the Aperture Emerging Photographer of the Year awards in 2019, and then having his NFT collection Startrails acquired by rapper Snoop Dogg – he began sharing his expertise through workshops across the country.
His North Lakes Milky Way Masterclass begins with hands-on guidance at the Norths Leagues Club, before the whole class heads to nearby Lake Samsonvale to photograph the Milky Way itself. In the masterclass, you’ll learn how to adjust camera settings, focus at night, and take long-exposure shots.
But don’t worry if you don’t have professional gear – David provides equipment, but even smartphones can capture the celestial magic.
“The masterclass is for everyone,” David said. “It’s all about capturing the beauty the way you see it.”
