The Deception Bay Heritage Trail leads you on a fascinating journey through time, blending the area’s natural beauty with our rich, local history. This self-guided trail is a perfect way to explore the area’s unique past while enjoying a scenic walk by the bay.
The trail stretches 2.3km (one way) and incorporates 16 stops and audio narration that guide you through the suburb’s captivating story. Each stop reveals a piece of Deception Bay’s history, from its Indigenous heritage to its European settlers.
This valuable oral history project ensures stories are passed down to the next generation. As you walk, you’ll be introduced to local characters like Dr Joseph Bancroft, Alexander Webster and the Wallin family.
Viv Tucker shares his experience of growing up in Deception Bay in the audio recordings.
“During the war, and I was only small, I used to have to go up to Wallin’s Kiosk every day for the paper and any mail, and a tin billy can full of milk from their dairy,” Viv says. “And then at Christmas time, there was a special treat – they made ice cream, for one day only, for one day of the year.”
A Scenic Journey Through History and Nature
During the trail, you’ll be introduced to potential theories about how the area got its name and discover what life was like through the decades. You’ll also learn how the Traditional Owners, the Gubbi Gubbi people, lived along the coastline, using traditional fishing methods to catch the abundance of sea life in the bay.
If you have an interest in flora and fauna, Deception Bay’s mangroves are a fascinating ecosystem and the walk encourages you to be present to enjoy the wildlife.
Whether you’re a history enthusiast or you’re just looking for a peaceful stroll with a view, the Deception Bay Heritage Trail is a rewarding experience as it reconnects you with times gone by.
The Heritage Trail begins where Joseph Crescent meets Beach Road and follows Captain Cook Parade to Esplanade South.
It’s worth pausing on Bayview Terrace to stop at Deception Bay Library to learn more about the area’s heritage.
