In honour of those we have lost, those who continue to fight and those who have survived their blood cancer journey, it’s time to Light up the Lake.

Light up the Lake is a free event (sponsored by the North Lakes Hotel) put together by Jane McMillan and her team of volunteers at Leukaemia Support Queensland (LSQ).

As LSQ president, Jane has spent the last 18 years advocating for patients and their families, ensuring they have the support they need during their cancer journey and raising awareness along the way.

“A big part of what we do is raise awareness and support the research for the treatment and cure of blood cancers,” Jane said. “This will be our first Light up the Lake, a night to celebrate those who have survived their journey with blood cancers, remember those we have lost and be genuinely grateful for all we have.”

The night will feature live music, a sausage sizzle, coffee and ice cream vans and finish off with a brightly lit walk around the lake.

“We encourage everyone to come along, bring a picnic or enjoy a sausage (at a small cost) and settle in to enjoy the night,” Jane said. “At 7pm, we will walk around the lake where everyone can shine their torches, phone lights, Thunder Sticks or anything else they have to make everything shine brightly to honour all those people in our lives affected by blood cancer.”

Light up the Lake is also an opportunity to thank the nurses who dedicate their time to the treatment and care of patients.

“One of the nurses will talk about treatment and the impact it can have on patients and their families,” Jane said. “We’re also hoping to have a patient talk about their experience as well.”

In some exciting news for LSQ and Light up the Lake, a special guest will lend her beautiful voice to entertain those who head along.

“We will have Faith Sosene, who is an amazing singer, joining us to share some music,” Jane said. “She was a finalist in The Voice in 2022 and we are so excited to have her as part of our first Light up the Lake.”
