The Bushwakka Dayboro Rodeo is back this May with an action-packed program for everyone to enjoy.
Located at Dayboro Showground, only 30 minutes from the hub of North Lakes, it offers an authentic country experience not too far from the hustle and bustle of the inner suburbs.
“It is one of a few rodeos that offers a full program, meaning we have everything from junior events to all of the bigger events, including the bareback and bronc rides, steer wrestling, barrel racing, steer undecorating, and the novice and open bull rides,” Beth Walsh, social media and sponsorship manager, said.
Running for almost 100 years, the Dayboro Rodeo is one of the region’s longest-standing community events. Originally known as the Diggers Rodeo, the first event held on Boxing Day 1938 featured 24 events, such as buck jumping and bullock riding, followed by a community campfire ball.
“Even back then, the intention was to make the rodeo an annual event,” Beth said.
Over the decades, volunteers have continually developed and modernised the facilities from hand-built timber yards from the 1970s and 80s to today’s steel arena and grandstand.
But Beth said there is one thing that has never changed – the spirit of it all.
“It began as a fundraising event by the Dayboro RSL subranch, and it continues to be an event to honour local service members, to strengthen community ties, and to create a family‑focused celebration of Dayboro’s rural heritage,” she said.
“It really has been woven into the town’s identity as it continues to not only bring people together, but also preserves local history and reinvests raised funds into community groups.”
Although the nominations are yet to open, spectators can expect a performance from elite riders from right across Queensland, including local riders who always draw strong support from the home crowd.
Thanks to the support of sponsors, organisers said they were able to offer well above-average prize money that called to all the cowboys and cowgirls, near and far, keen to test their luck!
Combined with the full rodeo program, there will be food and trade stalls, family activities and more.
