This will be your one stop shop for groceries and essentials with a Woolworths, Coles, Dan Murphy’s, and a medical clinic. All up there are 40 specialty stores at Market Square Deception Bay. Plus, the Deception Bay post office is at this location.

Westfield North Lakes

From Deception Bay, it’s about a 10 minute drive to Westfield North Lakes. Major retailers include department stores like Myer and Target, and popular supermarkets such as Coles, Woolworths, and Aldi. We love exploring stores like H&M, Zara, Cotton On, and Country Road without having the hassle of heading into Brisbane.

Peninsula Fair Shopping Centre

If you have a family of big eaters or love to entertain, Costco North Lakes will be your new haunt. It gets busy, so come ready to line up and to buy things you probably don’t really need. We enjoy trying the free samples and grabbing a cheap slice of pizza on the way out.

IKEA North Lakes

If you are wanting to upgrade your furniture after you move to Deception Bay, you can make it happen at IKEA North Lakes. There is also the bonus of a cheap and easy meal for the kids that you didn’t have to cook!

Other services in the area worth noting include the Deception Bay Doctors and Deception Bay Medical Centre. We love to take the kids for a night out at the Deception Bay Tavern. They offer a great family friendly menu and a kids play area so you can enjoy a quiet dinner. It’s a popular spot, so be sure to book a table ahead of time.

This café is on the waterfront and boasts a beautiful view. We love popping in for morning tea or a quick coffee. The banana bread is out of this world. You can sit inside or head outdoors to embrace the fresh sea air.

Zesty Lemon Cafe

The lovely and popular Zesty Lemon Cafe has a delicious range of desserts, cakes and slices that are all made in-house. There’s a view to the bay and shady trees to enjoy. A good plan is to take the kids for a walk along the Esplanade and finish with breakfast at the Zesty Lemon.

Winters are mild and comfortable, with daytime temperatures averaging in the low 20s Celsius and cooler evenings perfect for outdoor activities. Yes, we love to hit the Deception Bay foreshore all year round and luckily, we have the perfect subtropical climate to do just that.

Rainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year, with occasional summer storms bringing welcome relief from the heat. If you decide to move into the area, you will need to consider the Deception Bay tides as they influence activities such as fishing, boating, and beachcombing, while also impacting coastal erosion and access to the water.

Getting to Deception Bay

Deception Bay is approximately 32 kilometres from Brisbane or a 40 minute drive, travelling along Gympie Road (which becomes the Bruce Highway). Our suburb boasts convenient public transport options, making commuting and exploring the surrounding areas hassle-free.

The only direct mode of public transport in Deception Bay is the bus with all services traveling ether via or to/from the Deception Bay Bus Station located at 1 Bay Avenue. The bus route 662 completes a loop around the northern section of Deception Bay and connects to train services at Rothwell railway station. You can then take the train into Brisbane.

Things to Do and See Around the Area

In Deception Bay, there’s an abundance of activities to suit every interest, from enjoying the pristine beaches and coastal walks to exploring the local parks and nature reserves. Whether it’s fishing, kayaking, or simply relaxing by the water, Deception Bay offers endless opportunities for outdoor adventures and leisurely pursuits.

Fishing and boating

Deception Bay’s sheltered location and access to both river and bay make it an excellent spot for recreational boating and fishing. You can launch your boat from one of the local boat ramps, such as the one located at Captain Cook Parade, and explore the calm waters of the bay. For fishing, popular spots include the channels, mangroves, and shallow reefs where you can catch species like bream, flathead, whiting, and mud crabs.

Cottonwood Walk

The 1.5km Cottonwood Walk is part of the Deception Bay Heritage Trail. The track takes you along the picturesque esplanade and through parklands over boardwalks and shared paths from the Deception Bay Historic Bathing Pool and dog beach in the north, just past Boama Park and the wetlands reserve in the south. Don’t forget to pack a picnic as there are BBQ’s and picnic facilities spread along the route.

Deception Bay Heritage Trail

The fully accessible Deception Bay Heritage Trail covers about four kilometres and can be completed in around 90-minutes. During low tide, you might be able to spot the Bancroft Baths, carved into the sandstone and hidden in the mudflats. The baths were built to treat sick locals in the 19th century by using fresh sea air and water. Deception Bay holds the only known baths of these kind in the state, so they are a real treat to see. As you venture further along the trail you will find a former World War II army camp and other historically significant sites. Who would have thought Deception Bay had such a long history.

Deception Bay Driving Range and Mini Golf

Escape the hustle for a spot of mini golf at Deception Bay Driving range located 3 minutes off the Bruce Highway. This facility boasts an 18-hole mini golf course, a 280m fully lit driving range, full length golf balls, various meterage signs to discover your distances, and 26 undercover bays to keep you safe and dry from the weather. 

Deception Bay Aquatic Centre

The 50m outdoor Deception Bay pool is surrounded by shaded seating for families, a splash water park, an infant friendly pool and a heated learn to swim pool. Our kids love waiting for the bucket to tip in the splash zone. There is plenty of open grass areas for picnics and a large under cover BBQ area for birthday parties.

Deception Bay Skatepark

This popular hangout recently underwent a $1.5 million redevelopment, and it needs to be seen to be believed. If you’ve got kids that love to skate, they are going to be blown away by the extensive street course that has multiple rails, bowls, and ramps. With beginner to intermediate options, this is the perfect spot for local kids to train for the 2032 Brisbane Olympics. Go for gold!

Deception Bay Beaches

Deception Bay Beach isn’t your usual surf beach. It has gentle slopes and few waves with a base that is more muddy than sandy, and the kids love it! When the tide goes out you can explore the tidal flats and try to catch crabs on the shore. Take your dog too, because, dogs can be exercised off leash along the beach between Wallin Avenue and Joseph Crescent. 

PCYC Deception Bay

PCYC Deception Bay has over 1,000 members accessing their diverse range of sports and recreation programs, with gymnastics, judo, pickleball, basketball and badminton being some of the key activities.

Deception Bay Library

The Deception Bay Library is located opposite the foreshore on the corner of Bayview Terrace and Captain Cook Parade. They offer a separate area for kids including fun programs during the school holidays. We love to visit the library and then head to the beach for a swim.

Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre

This amazing community space offers services, activities, and initiatives that include and enhances social inclusion and employment opportunities. There is an after-school art program, and they offer a school holiday program packed full of activities and adventures. We always find it hard to get our kids to leave the Deception Bay Neighbourhood Centre.
