Father’s Day will be celebrated on Sunday 1 September, 2024 and if you’re looking for something to do this Father’s Day, North Lakes and surrounds have something for every type of Dad. Whether he’s a nature lover, an adventure seeker or a history buff, with so many Father’s Day events available in the local area, you won’t have to go far to enjoy the day!

Here are our top 10 choices for things to do around North Lakes that will make Dad’s Day special and memorable.

1. Explore the Local Lakes

Take a walk or pack a picnic basket and head to one of the beautiful lakes in the area. Lake Eden in North Lakes is surrounded by walking tracks, picnic spots, and abundant wildlife. The play area has plenty to keep the kids entertained, including climbing wall and swings, and there’s a large grassed area – so take a ball with you!

Another great option is Lake Kurwongbah near Petrie. This lake has beautiful picnic spots, BBQ facilities, and walking trails. Enjoy a relaxing day by the water, do some birdwatching or simply lay back and soak in the fresh air.

2. Visit a Local Heritage Museum

The Pine Rivers Heritage Museum in Old Petrie Town is a great way to get to know the local heritage, with displays on early settlers, Indigenous culture, and historic industries. There are films about Normanby Rum, the Australian Paper Mill and other early industries, and children can enjoy hands-on activities and special workshops that bring history to life.

You can also explore one of the earliest kit homes produced by James Campbell and Sons in the 1890s. The museum hosts seasonal events and temporary exhibitions, so see what’s happening on Father’s Day, and you can plan accordingly.

3. Enjoy a Father’s Day Feast with Entertainment

Petrie Hotel has modern and traditional pub food, while Kallangur Tavern serves up large portioned dishes that will fill any grumbling stomach.

Deception Bay Tavern has a lively atmosphere with a varied menu and regular entertainment, or for something a little different for Dad, head to Barracks by Striker, a Petrie-based cocktail and dessert bar. Yum!

4. Take A Hike

If you’re a nature enthusiast, head to North Pine Dam this Father’s Day and explore as you hike the trails. These trails will take you through winding bushland and along the water’s edge, where you can enjoy the views, spot local wildlife and breathe in the fresh air. Take a picnic and have some brunch or lunch while you’re there – you’ll find plenty of spots to stop.

Another great walk is Deception Bay Conservation Park, where you can explore coastal wetlands and mangroves. Freshwater National Park in Deception Bay has lush forest trails, while Griffin is home to Osprey House Environment and Education Centre where the Ospreys nest and breed. You can watch them catch fish and feed and enjoy the boardwalks through the wetlands.

5. Attend a Farmer’s Market

Start the day with a visit to the North Lakes Farmers Market. Held every Sunday from 6.30am, you can browse through stalls offering fresh produce, artisanal goods, and delicious street food. You might find a gift for Dad, or simply let him enjoy a delicious, fresh breakfast from one of the vendors.

Sample local delicacies and stock up for the rest of your Father’s Day activities. If you have a picnic or BBQ planned, the Farmer’s Market is the best preparation!

6. Have a BBQ at a Local Park

Dads (most) love a good BBQ, so plan a BBQ with friends and family to celebrate this Father’s Day. There are so many parks in the area that offer excellent BBQ facilities, picnic tables and playgrounds for the kids, you’re spoilt for choice. There’s Aurora Boulevard Park in North Lakes, Halpine Lake Park in Mango Hill, John Oxley Reserve in Murrumba Downs, Sweeney Reserve in Petrie, and many more.

You’ll find the parks have great facilities for a fun day out, and plenty of green space for a variety of outdoor games and activities. With a BBQ at one of our local parks, you can make your Father’s Day as busy as you like, or as relaxed as you like.

Step back in time with a visit to Old Petrie Town. It’s like walking through the pages of a history book, where the old buildings and shops blend the charm of yesteryear with modern creativity. Take a walk through the Petrie Historical Village, and you’ll feel as though you’ve entered a time machine.

There are plenty of activities for kids and adults to celebrate Dad, including vintage train rides and traditional sweet shops. The town also has regular markets, live music, and events that show off the culture of the area, so keep an eye out and see if there are any special Father’s Day events.

8. It’s Time For Adventure

Have a memorable day with an adrenaline-pumping session at Delta Force Paintball Petrie. It’s a great way to bond with Dad while taking paintballing to the next level, surrounded by Blackhawk helicopters, tanks, giant stone pyramids, prison camps, and zombie graveyards.

Red Lock Escape Rooms in North Lakes also gives you a bit of a rush as you try to find clues (and work together) to escape the rooms. Revolution Sports Park is another venue full of adventure – it includes rock climbing, Ninja Ramps, Basketball lanes, trampolines, massive airbags and a dedicated Kiddies Playground!

10. Wind Down Options

If Dad wants to wind down after a busy morning, he might enjoy a more laid-back activity, so head to the Kallangur Memorial Bowls Club for a friendly game of lawn bowls. It doesn’t matter if Dad is a seasoned bowler or is trying it for the first time; it’s a fun way to spend the afternoon.

Or you could book him in for a massage at one of the local spa services. A massage can help improve circulation, relieve stress, and rejuvenate Dad’s tired body.
